Consciousness In The Snows Of Kilimanjaro
Consciousness In The Snows Of Kilimanjaro The Snows of Kilimanjaro is a short novel by well-known American novelist Ernest Hemmingway (1899-1961) by the use of stream of consciousness. The novel shapes the hero Harry, the dying writer, although he feared the advent of death, eventually he expected to rise his own soul to snow-capped peak of Kilimanjaro, so as to realize the detachment of spirit and surpass himself. The Snows of Kilimajaro contains powerful images of death. In fact, the opening paragraph of the novel tells the reader about a carcass of a leopard and Hemingways creates a trio of images that are showed throughout the novel: snow God death. The novel deals with an extreme life situation the experience closely relates to death and the dying experience . Death is exsited no matter place in the novel, it is showed in the main plot of the story and the parts describing the remembrance of the heros life. Decay, destruction and death are the main themes of this short story. Hemingway described the hero Harry with flesh and blood, longing for having real life. Although he felt very helpless and angry for the fate and the death, he still remained clear-headed mentally in the dying point of the death, reflecting himself by the way of recalling the remorse, and regretting his mistake and wasted time. In order to show this theme, Hemingway used his unique technique of stream of consciousness, much space was used to describe Harrys memories in the novelà £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬Å¡In the passage of describing the reality that death is approachingà ¼Ã
âthe narrative of stream of consciousness successfully was inserted in the main form of narration interposed, flashback, multi-perspective rendering method and symbolic, sketching out Harrys life experience, succeeding in describing the activities of Harrys mind, and depicting vividly the characters personality II Embodiments of Stream of Consciousness in the Snows of Kilimanjaro Stream of consciousness is emerged on the basis of realism between the 1920s and 1930s, which breaking the traditional literary technique including character introduction, plot arrangement and comment on the psychological activities, while directly representing awareness activities of the characters, subconscious process is its main feature in particular, image and inner attitude of the characters are regarded as manifesting form. Psychological state is the center line when the hero faced the death approaching in the Snows of Kilimanjaro, radiating out the stream of consciousness is the experience of Harrys life and all the stories related to the death, the center line is regarded as the main line of the whole story vertically develops.Harrys death refracts Harrys life, personality and his attitude towards death. All these above are inserted some narrative of stream of consciousness in the form of narration interposed, flashback, multi-perspective rendering method and symbolic in the center line. Finally, all the consciousness were attributed to a kind of sense, which the sublimation of peoples spiritual realm and the rise of aircraft are integrated, the article mounts to climax , beyond the space-time and reshapes the realm of himself. Time and space crisscross The narration split into two time and spatial levels made it possible for Hemingway to incorporate wider experience. The first level is precisely defined in time and space, whereas the second level is not restricted in this respect. It is on the edge of a dream, so it belongs rather to that surreal world. The combination of both gives strong sense of deep feeling and bitter experience of this violent world. Life is seen as a constant flow of conflicting activities, a mixture of phenomena flourishing and at the same time fading and due to destruction. Hemingway breaks through the limits o f time and space in his pithy style, almost entirely revealing everything both Harrys waking and imagination. During the course of the bounces between Harrys waking and imagination, the author does not simply describe Harrys vacant current -from world-weariness to indignation, but a sort of complicated minds, and meanwhile readers discover the course of Harrys constantly shifting thought-from simplicity to degradation, and then to be awake. Through the double clues of Harrys consciousness, both the back-and-forth-springing and the secret ones as the diagram above illustrates, the entire life of the protagonist comes to be presented step by step and increasingly clear from Harrys recall and regret without chronological ordering. But with this unique employment of the technique of the back-and-forth-springing structure, Harrys stream of consciousness occurs logically and soundly at the same as the events happen around him ,even those before. Reality and Fantasy Interlacing Looking through the whole novel, all the creation of novel are completed with the aid of Harrys stream of consciousness and inner monologue except a few dialogues occurred on Harry and Helen in the awake time, and the limited scenery that Hemingway saw through the eye of hero, by the way of the mixture of reality and fantasy, so that readers can understand Harrys life and psychological state that he faced death threat and feelings of remorse. We can see the two different levels of stream of consciousness between reality and fantasy, which interweaves each other, sometimes from real life to fantasy, and sometimes from dreams to reality, as a result that the readers can straightly glimpse the inner world of characters to penetrate his feeling. In the activities of fantasy awareness, the novel shows the complex events of the past that Harry wrote after he stayed at continental place, including his childhood, the cruelty of the First World War and his skiing, looking for stimulation in gambling, his pain from anesthesia war; the journey and settle in European after the post-war, making money by writing, the personal feelings from increasingly deepening social crisis and social contradictions, his love and dissolute life and loneliness. Under the control of waking awareness, he remembered his wasteful luxury, extravagant, and hedonistic decadent life filled with fancy money and chasing women. He had destroyed his talent by not using it, by betrayals of himself and what he believed in, by drinking so much that he blunted the edge of his perceptions, by laziness, by sloth, and by snobbery, by pride and by prejudice, by hook and by crook. The fear of death for Harry from disgust, hatred was gradually changed into understanding, calm and acceptance. After all, he still loved life, he moved to Africa in order to start from scratch, but he contracted an incurable disease in the place, he was eager to find someone to save him from the death in the last time. At the moment, illusion stream of consciousness appeared, Harry saw that the aircraft droved by Compton to rescue him. He lay still and death was not there. It must have gone around another street. It went in pairs, on bicycles, and moved absolutely silently on the pavements. Because, just then, death had come and rested its head on the foot of the cot and he could smell its breath. Readers think that Harry was really sitting in the aircraft and escaped the death situation, until finally readers know that death did come, and which is the feature of description from illusion to reality of Ernest Hemingway. The master of modern narrative art, Hemingway responses to Harrys the flow of stream of consciousness, so that the stream of consciousness and inner monologue are become into the most powerful tool to express the thinking and activities of the characters. When the story reaches a climax and the energy of theme concentrates to the maximum, the two consciousnesses of reality and fantasy from Harry are integrated into one unit, spewing out the stream of consciousness in the last moment of struggling between the life and the death, which makes all the activities of sense are concentrated together, he dreamed that he flew to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro by plane, Harry understood that the place was his willing. In fact, which is the final climb of Harrys soul to the immortal realm of the spirit. Multiple points of view Hemingway chooses the multi- points of view in the fluid present of novel, so that the hero can scan and look over from several angles and reflect on their past behaviour. The frequent alternation on the person is embodied in the text description. You and he are often alternated in the same sentence in the description, making the narrative points of view frequently change. An objective description is the consciousness guide of readers, while the second-person narrative is associated with the character and the focus of attention from reader consciousness. In this way, describing characters inner activity as if Harry thinks aloud. Through the conversion of narrative point of view, the inner world of characters

Marketing The New Car Brand
In undifferentiated strategy, it is assumed that the market is one great homogeneous unit, with no significant differences between individuals thin that market. 4. 3) Customized approach: Companies overlook customized approach to make brand profitable in market as it is strategy which is adopt to develop for each customer as opposed to each segment. This approach is dominant in market. This approach can make brand different from other car brands by giving the different requirements in assembly line. Undifferentiated marketing would be the best for England SEC.According to Blithe, undifferentiated marketing is about using a ââ¬Ëscatter gun' approach (2012: 85). In the future plans we will introduce customized approach as well. By adopting this approach we can make our brand different from other car brands by giving the different requirements in assembly line for the manufacture of automobiles. The cars will not be class-leaders, and European models will offer higher standards, but the launch England SEC is at least inoffensive and should offer lots of room. 5. Positioning: Kettle (1997) says that ââ¬ËPositioning is the act of designing the company's offering and target customer's minds.Positioning is not what you do to a product; it is what you do to the mind of a prospect (Rise and Trout, 1972). To make our brand compete in racket we have to focus on some positioning strategies. Fig (AAA) According to market survey Renault has positioned their brand up, that creates a vacuum and Geol. can hold that position. As AKA, Haunted, fiat and Citroen will be the main competitors for our England SEC, so in order to penetrate in the market we have to introduce more competitive strategies. Along with providing low price and longest warranty, Geol. has to pay more focus on customer services. Therefore geol. is providing breakdown cover for three years and as geol. exclusive Geol. will provide customers with low premium or can also offer them change in their premium n h eavy months so that customer will attract to buy the car and can offer discount if they make the payment in full as one off payment. This will help Geol. to stand out than other competitors and will help to get more sales and profit. 6. Marketing Mix: The term ââ¬Å"marketing mixâ⬠was first coined by Neil Borden, the president of American association in 1953. It is a mixture of several ideas and plans brought forward to promote a particular product and brand. The elements of marketing mix are often called the four As of marketing which are: product price promotion place Fig (AAA) This four up's concept was used in old era when choice was limited with no extra services. But now in this changing consumer marketing services with product are essential which gives rise to 5th P I. E. People. Some commentators added two more As which are physical evidence and processes. For our Geol. England SEC, we have used these 7 As as follow: 6. 1) Product: Product quality and reliability shoul d be in our mind if we are going to capture consumer market. The specification of England SEC is 0-MPH: 12. Sec; Top speed: 1 MPH; Economy: 43. Amps; ICC: 181 g/km; Kerr weight: keg; Engine type: 4 heel drive; Power: EBPP at ramp; Torque: 127 lb. Ft. At ramp; Gearbox: 5- SSP manual. Rupee's automotive fit-and-finish departments certainly don't have anything to fear from this car Our brand Geol. England SEC provides convenience and comfort, reliable performance and long warranty of 7 years to compete main competitor Aka because Ski's unique selling point is its 7-year warranty (business case studies, 2012).The SEC isn't going to threaten Rupee's class-leading family cars ââ¬â but from EYE. O for a full-sized family car, no one will expect it to. 6. 2) price: Sound pricing decisions are crucial to a successful business and should be considered at both long-term strategic and short-term tactical levels. We priced our brand similar to competitor and Geol. SEC will be EYE that is chea p and affordable for the purchase of a new car. Geol. will be launched as an entry level, for money'. Geol. will providing easy finances and also provide discount to the customers who will pay the balance off in one payment. . 3) Promotion: As people in UK are not aware of our brand Geol., so we will spend a huge amount to promote by participation in automobile exhibitions, advertising on internet, swappers, magazines radio, television and by personal selling leaflets. 6. 4) Place: The place aspect of marketing mix deals with the distribution channel for products and services. In order to control the distribution channel, Geol. at the beginning will generate more automotive dealers so that the car display shops go high and people can easily approach it.We will increase the numbers of directly operated stores in order to get an access to the local markets and will also create a website in order to reserve a place in the e-commerce world. 6. 5) People: This element of marketing mix co vers the front line sales and customer service staff ho will have a direct impact on how your product is perceived. Galleys distributors will not only make their staff well-trained and knowledgeable about the product, but also there will be the right kind of people for the Job. Geol. will consider customer service as top preference. . 6) Physical Evidence: Geol. will provide as much evidence of the quality as possible. To make customer relax and confident Geol. will also offer test drive service, so the customer can have some practical evidence before buying. Geol. will ask for feedback from customers so we can develop to attract new customers. 6. 7) Processes: The process part of the mix is about being ââ¬Ëeasy to do business with'. Geol. will provide customer with customer help line number which will be easily accessible to the right department to solve their problem.Geol. will also design its website with update technology, which will show the availably or non-availability of the product in particular shops. These advances processes will help Geol. to attract customers because of its ââ¬Ëeasy-to approach' method. 7. SOOT ANALYSIS: weaknesses, opportunities and threats involved in a project or in business venture. The soot analysis for Geol. SEC is briefly described in table below: Table (AAA) 8. Recommendations: We should go for media advertising to improve brand image by spreading company policies and innovations to our consumer.Advertisement of Geol. through different channel like web, print media etc. Is also necessary. As customer today has become more cynical, time constrained and demanding therefore to deliver real customer satisfaction, our priority at launch is to have a trained representative network. Mostly customers have concerns about customer services, to get market edge we have to make and consistently keep our customer service as good as customer needs and acquirement. Geol. can target new customer through logical appraisal and feedback .We should have to customize our product according to customer desire like fancy styled alloy rims for young customers, diesel engine for customers doing high motorway mileage etc. Geol. should do engine modifications to attract wide range of customers. Geol. should not be market orientated only for capturing the consumer technology and have to do some innovation regarding car specifications like car interior/exterior design in order to compete with other car manufacturers and to capture consumer intentions. We have to widen our range as quickly as possible, probably at least a new model range every year for the next few years. 9.Summary of Days article: the Days article says that business performance depends on the advance skill in understanding the customer which has being generally approved by the marketing researcher who says the impact is high in market orientation on business performance. It is almost axiomatic that through on-going monitoring of customers, their needs, and ma rket conditions, firms adapt to develop and deliver the products and services that are valued by customers by using total quality management (TTS). This behavior, termed market orientation (MO), is now central to marketing thought and practice as a key predictor of firm performance. However, the construct continues to receive critical, largely adverse, commentary from some scholars, Hammer and Parallax (1994) argued that an MO leaves the organization open to the tyranny of the server market in which managers see the world only through their current customers' eyes and develop TTS which does not give positive output. Brother, Hilbert, and Pit (1999) suggested that being market oriented detracts from innovation. The common theme among the criticisms is that businesses pay a penalty or being market oriented.Slater and Nerve (1995) also argued that MO is ââ¬Å"inherently entrepreneurialâ⬠because a market-oriented firm is able to anticipate and respond to the latent and emerging ne eds of customers. Mentor, and ?isomer (2002) found that MO mediated the impact of entrepreneurial proclivity on business performance. Although they advance the literature, these studies do not explicitly acknowledge or measure the proactive dimension of MO and thereby fail to respond adequately to the charge that MO is overly responsive However, significant gaps remain in responding to the critics.First, scholars present an overly positive view of responsive and proactive MO they neglect the potential costs associated with each dimension of MO that may diminish firm performance. The responsive and proactive market orientations may influence overall new product program performance through their impacts on incremental and radical innovations, respectively. This suggests that project teams working on product improvements may practice responsive MO, while those working on radical innovations practice proactive market orientation. 0. Summary of ââ¬Å"the new consumerâ⬠article: See appendix, page 12. 11. Critical appraisal of recommendations in relation to Days article : In our recommendations we are quite agreed with Days initial statement that customers are very important and the more you know what customers want, the more you are going to do business profitably. And we also recommended that business should relate and regulate its capabilities according to customers demand. But we are not agreed with Days statement of being totally market oriented using TTS.Here we will oriented because it get distracted from innovation and that's why we recommended that Geol. should not be market orientated only for capturing the consumer market UT also should have a look over future aspects and innovations. 12. Relating critical appraisal to the new consumer: As relating new consumer to the recommendation made on the days article, we analyses baker also said that the consumer should be given be given importance as the business environment has been changed now.He said the key challenges facing consumer marketers have been thrown up by the tectonic change that has impacted the macro-marketing environment. In the shift from a production-driven to a consumption-led economy, conventional approaches to consumer marketing are not succeeding in enabling organizations to master the dynamic complexity of the new market place. These key challenges can be summarized as the need to: Address the concern of brand owners and retailers. Embrace the new consumer. Help organizations develop real consumer responsiveness. Lift marketing out of its crisis.

Macroeconomic – Government Policies in Reducing Inflation and Unemployment
MACRO-ECONOMIC| Discuss the role of government policy in reducing unemployment and inflation. In your discussion make use of the diagrammatic representation of the macroeconomy developed in lectures in Term 2| Unemployment and inflation are factors that have negative effects on the performance of the economy as a whole. Therefore, policies to achieve low and stable price in? ation, a high and stable level of employment are big macroeconomics issues of our time. This essay focuses on discussing the role of government policy on reducing unemployment and inflation in relation to Keynesian and Monetarist approaches, including examples of impacts of expansionary fiscal and monetary policies on New Zealand economy. Fiscal policy is a demand side policy used by the government to help direct the economy by altering the level of expenditure and/or rate of taxes. Expansionary fiscal policy refers to increase government expenditure or a lower tax in order to inject into or withdraw from the circ ular flow of money respectively, this results a raise in aggregate demand and thus national income. On the other hand, deflationary (contractionary) fiscal policy is used by the government as a tool to control the pressures of inflation by reducing expenditure or increasing taxes, which thus reduce aggregate demand and preventing excessive inflation. Fiscal policy is used by Keynesians to increase/decrease public expenditure and cut/increase taxes during a recession/boom. When they decrease taxes and increase public expenditure, it encourages people to spend, thus raise consumer expenditure. This contributes the reduced unemployment (due to the increased public spending creating more demand and more jobs to increase the supply of goods and services), but an increased inflation (due to the increased spending and wage demands). On the other hand, when Keynesians use fiscal policy to increase taxes and reduce public spending, they cause higher levels of unemployment and lower levels of i nflation. This deflationary fiscal policy is usually used during a boom period.Figure 1 : Keynesians traditionally emphasises the role of fiscal policy as the key tool of economic management and views monetary policy simply as a backup to fiscal policy. They would argue that direct interest rate changes could be used to control aggregate demand. Whereas, Monetarism does not believe that government should intervene by managing the level of aggregate demand, they rather prefer the use of monetary policy to achieve a long-run view of price stability.Monetary policy involves manipulating the interest rate charged by the central bank for lending money to the banking system in an economy, which influences greatly a vast number of macroeconomic variables. In the UK, the government set the policy targets, but the Bank of England and the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) are given authority and freedom to set interest rates, which is formally once every month. Contractionary monetary policy ma y be used to reduce price in? ation by increasing the interest rate.Because banks have to pay more to borrow from the central bank they will increase the interest rates they charge their own customers for loans to recover the increased cost. Banks will also raise interest rates to encourage people to save more in bank deposit accounts so they can reduce their own borrowing from the central bank. As interest rates rise, consumers may save more and borrow less to spend on goods and services. Firms may also reduce the amount of money they borrow to invest in new equipment.A reduction in capital investment by ? rms will reduce their ability to increase output in the future. Higher interest rates may therefore reduce economic growth and increase unemployment. Expansionary monetary policy may be used during an economic recession to boost demand and employment by cutting interest rates. However, increasing demand can push up prices and may increase consumer spending on imported goods and s ervices. In some cases, lower interest rates may be ineffective in boosting demand. Therefore in March 2009 the Bank's Monetary Policy Committee announced that in addition to setting Bank Rate, it would start to inject money directly into the economy by purchasing assets such as government bonds or other securities ââ¬â often known as quantitative easing. This means that the instrument of monetary policy shifts towards the quantity of money provided rather than the price at which the Bank lends or borrows money (Bank of England website) Fiscal and Monetary policies come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages. The most likely argument against its implementation is the substantial lag that accompanies both these policies, for example the time from when the policy has been implemented till the time its impact is felt in the economy. The following section will indicate how the expansionary Fiscal and Monetary Policies impact price stability (inflation rate: 1-3%) and full employment objectives of New Zealand. Both monetary and fiscal policies have a significant impact on inflation. An Expansionary Monetary policy results in lowering the interest rate (OCR) as previously mentioned that in turn increases the quantity of goods and services demanded at any given price level, hence contributing to shifting aggregate demand to the right. In a climate of recession, where money supply is limited, Inflation is not a significant factor in the decision making of the NZ government or the RBNZ Governor; on the contrary increase in inflation is rather seen as positive sign of growth during recession as it indicates an increase in demand. This is further evident by the recessionary climate resulting in a drop in inflation as quoted ââ¬Å"Inflation is set to plunge over the next year, starting with a 0. 5% fall expected for Q4 2008. Retail spending is expected to be down significantly for November, as weak core sales were amplified by lower spending on fuel (petrol p rices fell by 16% in the month). Car sales could see a technical bounce after plunging by 14. 5% in October, but they will remain at very depressed levels. â⬠The above quote underlies the fact that in the current environment an increase in inflation will be seen as a positive sign. The expansionary fiscal and monetary policy pursued presently fare well in a recessionary climate, however if they are pursued over a long period of time, then they could lead to creating an inflationary gap. An inflationary gap occurs when aggregate demand exceeds supply. This can thus result in ââ¬Å"Overheating the economyâ⬠i. e. Actual GDP exceeds Potential GDP and leads to a significant Trade deficit and unemployment as well. Figure 2: Inflationary Gap The aim of full employment objective is to keep the level of unemployment in check. The increase of unemployment is accompanied with a recession, due to primarily a drop in aggregate demand. The impact of the expansionary fiscal and monetary policy as mentioned above results in increasing aggregate demand thus essentially resulting in people demanding and consuming more, which results in people buying more goods and services that consequently results in reducing unemployment as demand exceeds supply as opposed to the current scenario, and thus resulting in more people being employed to meet demand. The impact of this expansionary policy may lead to an increase in inflation; however in the short run there exists a trade-off relationship between unemployment and inflation as can be seen in the figure below.Figure 3: Philips Curve describing Inverse Relation of Inflation and Unemployment In conclusion, fiscal and monetary policies are tools used by most national governments to control the economy, including the term of reducing inflation and unemployment. Inflation and unemployment are factors that could give negative impact on the economy if either of them is high. Government needs to predict precisely the situation of t he economy to issue the right fiscal or monetary policies. It usually takes at least several months for policies to take fully effect. Now he is in office, along with Interior Secretary, Gail Norton, who shares his view. Legislation was introduced in the House and Senate in early March 2001 to open the plain to drilling. Because of its enormous potential and the vital need for domestic sources of oil and gas, the Depa rtment of Interior recommends that the Congress enact Legislation which would make this entire available for oil drilling. Ms. Norton has been given the right to impose necessary and appropriate measures to protect refuge resource while efficiently removing oil. Despite the remote location, it is the most attractive onshore petroleum exploration target in the United States (ÃâResource Assessment ). It appears that the President, his Interior Secretary, and the Department of Interior have forgotten the first reason for creating this refuge. It was done by humans, who valued nature, not to be opened to oil drilling and possible development.
